Lighting can be a very tricky trick to master. The shadows can be very tough to depict correctly. Cartoonists do not always draw the shadows super realistically but instead draw shapes that are meant to symbolize the shadows. These sharp shapes can be really neat looking. Other artists try to capture the light more realistically using airbrushing, stippling, cross-hatching or various other shading techniques. Whatever technique you choose to use, many of the principals of lighting are the same. For instance, no matter what you are shading, you will need to determine where your light source is.

Lighting plays a large role in indicating form and making an image appear more 3D. In order to really understand light sources, you will need to look at objects in a variety of lightings and keep the logic behind the lighting consistent. The light sources are the points from which light comes, such as the sun or the lights in the room. Only by doing this will the lighting trick the eyes into seeing the entire image as realistic. Be sure to look at how different shapes such as cubes, spheres, pyramids, cylinders and cones and also look at the shapes in all sorts of lightings and times of the day.

If you have a pencil in hand, there are a couple of ways that you can shade.

1. Scribbling

The most intuitive way to shade is to scribble by swirling your pencil, spending more time swirling in areas that are supposed to be more shaded. However, this is not the only way.

2. Stipple

You can also use the stipple method, which involves placing a large series of dots closer together or farther apart.

3. Crosshatch

You can also use the crosshatching method where you make several X marks, pressing more lightly as you move towards the more well lit parts.

4. Hatching

Finally, you can use vertical lines, with some lines thicker and closer together while other lines are more spread apart. Any of these methods can be very useful when shading a colored image. With color, you can also add highlights by adding white to a particular part of the image. But do not use pure white. Make sure that the color in the image mixes in with the white.

5. Airbrush
If you are using a graphics program, you can use the airbrush tool to lay down pixels in an unsystematic way.

6. Blur

You can also shade by throwing lumps of color into the picture and then using the blur tool to blend the colors together.

7. Smudge

Or you can use the smudge tool to rub different colors together. Use whatever methods you prefer.

8. Cell Style

For cell-style shading, you will need to create different shapes in order to indicate different shadows. If you have a steady hand, you can draw these shapes. Or you can use the pen tool found in some graphics programs. Then all you need to do is find a shade that is darker than the shade that you are placing shadows over.

9. Line Width

Change the width of the lines, using thinner lines on the parts of the character that have light cast upon them while using darker lines where the shadows hit.

10. Screentones

The final method is to use screentones. Screentones are conventionally used for black and white comics. The best way to get screentones is to make them yourself using filters or to buy a screentones program.

1. Don’t start a layout without having a concept/idea.

Before starting, ask yourself: who am I designing this for? What are the target’s preferences? How am I going to make this better than the client’s competition? What will be my central “theme”? Would it revolve around a certain color, a certain style? Will it be clean, grungy, traditional, modern etc?

2. Don’t obsess over the trends.

Shiny buttons, reflections, gradients, swirls and swooshes, grungy elements – all these are staples in contemporary web design. 3. Don’t make everything of equal importance.

Egalitarianism is desirable in society, but it doesn’t apply to the elements on your web page. You need to direct their sight to the page elements in a certain order – the order of importance. One headline must be the main headline, while the others will subordinate. Make one picture stand out (in the header, maybe) and keep the others smaller. If you have more than one menu on the page, decide which one is the most important and attract the visitor’s view to it. Create a hierarchy.

4. Don’t repeat yourself too much and too often.

It’s easy to get tricked into reusing your own elements of design, especially once you got to master them to perfection. But you don’t want your portfolio to look like it was created for the same client, do you? Try different fonts, new types of arrows, borders styles, layer effects, and color schemes. Find alternatives to your go-to elements. Impose yourself to design the next layout without a header. Break your habits and keep your style diverse.

5. Don’t disregard the technology.

If you’re not the one coding the website, talk to your programmer and find out how the website will be implemented. If it’s going to be all flash, then you want to take advantage of the great possibilities for the design and not make it look like a standard HTML page. On the other hand, if the website will be dynamic and database-driven, you don’t want to get too unconventional with the design and make the programmer’s job impossible.

6. Don’t mix and match different design elements to please your client?

Instead, offer your expertise: explain how different elements look great in a certain context but don’t work in another one or in combination with other elements. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t listen to your client. Take into account all their suggestion, but do it to their best interest. If what they suggest doesn’t work design-wise, offer arguments and alternatives.

7. Don’t try to reinvent the wheel.

With a content heavy or a portal-style website, you want to keep the navigation at the top or at the left. Don’t change the names for the standard menu items or for things like the shopping cart or the wish list. The more time a visitor needs to find what they are looking for then more likely it is they will leave the page. You can bend these rules when you design for other creative – they will enjoy the unconventional elements. But as a general rule, don’t do it for other customers.

If you are comfortable with the designer’s portfolio and education, check their references. Just because they have a degree and threw together a nice portfolio does not mean that they have made their clients happy. Check with anyone you can get a hold of that has experience with that designer.

If you have made it this far, you probably have a pretty good feeling about that designer. Now is when you should take a closer look at his resume and background. Try to find out if he took initiative in school and was a leader in different clubs or groups. Find out if he is a leader at his firm. You are looking for someone who will go out of their way to make your ad campaign successful, and it is designers who show leadership skills that usually do this.

Finally, it comes down to the bottom line. You have a budget under which you must work. You have a certain amount of money that you can spend on your color printing. If you feel that a designer is too expensive, and you can get equal quality for a more reasonable price, then feel free to turn them down. On the other hand, if a designer charges a significantly lower price than all the others, there may be a reason for that, too. You have to go with your instinct in some cases, but you always want to feel comfortable with the designer you choose.
